A most heinous crime was committed
Thursday morning at Mineral in
which Tom Mobett, a well known weight
boss of that camp murdered his step-
son, Earl Ford, an eleven year old
boy. The murdered boy was found
yesterday morning about 10 o'clock
and the perpetrator of the revolting
crime is now in jail at Columbus where
he dumbly denies his guilt yet cannot
refute the overwhelming evidence against
him.

Deputy Sheriff John Aitchison was in the
city this morning and gave the following
version of the dastardly crime:

"Tom Mobett and his wife have had trouble
was said to be over the stepson. About a
month ago they began living together again.
Trouble ensued over the stepson, Earl Ford,
a boy 11 years of age. Yesterday morning
Mobett left home in the early hours with
the stepson and that was the last seen of
the boy alive. Yesterday morning the body
of the boy was found beneath a privy, after
the entire neighborhood had been searching
for the boy night and day. The crime is to
revolting to give the details. Suffice to
say that evidently Mobett had led the hated
stepchild direct to the privy and there
choked him to death. The body was shoved
under the building and the building pulled
over by the murderer in attempting to
conceal the crime.

Physicians found the windpipe broken, and
a few marks on the body. Excitement ran
high and Mobbett was spirited away to the
county jail at Columbus for safe keeping.
A lynching is threatened. The hearing is
set for Monday morning."

Tom Mobett was well known in Mineral where
he has been weight boss at No. 7 of the
Great Southwestern Mining Co.

Developments in the murder case
at Mineral show it to have been
an atrocious crime. The body of Earl
Ford, the 11 year old boy, was
found face down in the vault of an
outhouse, the body all doubled up
and forced in to filth by considerable
force. The outhouse had been abandoned
one upset, and after thrusting his
victim in the murderer set it up over
the body. The boy had been violently
choked till the bone in his throat
and windpipe had been broken, and
had had breathed after being forced
into the filth. It is an awfully
atrocious crime and considerable
threat been made to hang Marbut, the
stepfather, now in the county jail
charged with murder.

TOM MORBITT AND HIS WIFE
ON TRIAL FOR KILLING
EARL FORD
--------------------

The preliminary examination of Tom
Morbitt and his wife on the charge of
murdering her 11 year old son, Earl Ford,
by a former marriage, was held by Justice
Tanquary in the court room of the court
house, begining at 11 o'clock Friday
forenoon.

A great number of citizens of Mineral
came on the morning train as witness or
as spectators. They were all fine looking
people, gental mannered, and not one of
them was in sympathy apparently with the
man accused of the aweful crime.

All of the testimony was about as the
story has heretofore been related. Morbitt
and his wife had had trouble and had
separated, patching up their troubles a
month before the boy was destroyed. Morbitt
was very jealous of his wife and hated her
offspring by a former marriage.

On the morning of June 29 about 6 o'clock
Morbitt and the boy left together. Morbitt
afterward appeared about town, and later the
mother made inquiry about the boy. She also
about 11 in the afternoon, said she was
anxious to pay her dues in a burial association,
so that if the boy were brought home dead
she would get the benefit of it.

At 6 in the evening Tom McGluty asked Morbitt
if he had found the boy and the reply was,
"No, but he'll come pullin'in, as he is afraid
of the dark, and I'll kill him." McGinty
thought this was Morbitt's way of threatening
punishment. Other testimony proved that Morbitt
was nearly always drunk and vicious.

I.H.Dewey, a very reputable citizen, says he
had known the boy, Earl Ford, for two years
and that he was a very inoffensive child,
apparently cowed by brutal treatment, and that
he could not think he was vicious.

Tom Morbitt, the principal in this crime, is
is a heavy set, youthful appearing, smooth
faced man of perhaps 32 or 33 years. He has
smooth brown hair and a round full face. There
is a gleam in his eye that is against him,
but excitement might change his natural
expression. He seems utterly indifferent and
careless.

The mother of the boy is dressed in mourning
and is not a bad looking women. Her features
are heavy and her hair and eyes are dark. She
does not look like she could have been a party
to so awful a crime.

The man and women walked together to and from
the jail in apparently companionable frame of
mind toward each other.

The hearing was concluded about 2 o'clock,
Justice Tanquary committing both Morbitt and
his wife for trail at the September term of
the district court on the charge of murder in
the first degree and fixing bail for him at
$5,000 and for her $3,000. They will be unable
to give it and and will stay in the county jail.
