HARLAN COUNTY JOURNAL - ALMA, NEBRASKA - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1901 - FREDERICK WILLIAMS OBITUARY - PAGE 1
Frederick Williams was born on Thursday, May 8, 1828 in Washington County, Grandville, New York. Frederick Williams height was 5 feet 9 1/4 inches and his complexion was dark, his eyes hazel and his hair dark. His occupation was farmer and later a carpenter. Frederick Williams and Julia Caroline Sweazey Ray were married at Marengo, Iowa County, Iowa on February 8, 1854 by County Judge William U. Wallace. The witnesses were John Robertson and Fransis Shaff. Their marriage record can be found at Marengo, Iowa County, Iowa in Book A-B page 8. Frederick and Julia had five daughters; Josephien born September 10, 1855 in Iowa County, Iowa, Francelia born July 13, 1857 in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, Lucinda born August 7, 1860 in Tama County, Iowa, Melvina born December 7, 1863 in Johnson County, Iowa, Laura born August 11, 1866 in Johnson County, Iowa.
Frederick Williams enlistment in the Civil War was at Grinnell, Iowa on October 17, 1864. Frederick was a substitute for Frederick Carter and this is on all of his roll call. Frederick Williams was 34 years of age when he enlisted. Frederick Williams was a Private in Company F of 13th Regiment of Iowa Volunteer Infantry. The Company F was attached to different Companies for different battles. Frederick Williams was Mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky on July 21, 1865. He was last paid on April 30, 1865 so he was due $26.27. Frederick Williams was a member of Post of the Grand Army of the Republic in Long Island, Kansas. In Frederick Williams military records there isn't a discharge. If Frederick Carter's records could be found there is probably a discarge in them.
When Frederick Williams and his family left Iowa they went to Dorchecter, Saline County, Nebraska. Here Frederick homesteaded in Dorchester, Saline County, Nebraska and the papers were filed on November 16, 1875 at 5 o'clock. They lived in Dorchester, Nebraska and some of the children were listed on the school census for that county. Some of the children were also married in Saline County and the records are at Wilber, Nebraska the County Seat.
