Rodney Allen Sweet, 51, of Midland, died early Monday morning, Feb. 22, 2016, at his home with his loving family at his side. He was born Oct. 13, 1964, son of Richard Goodell and the late Catherine Ann (Brewer) Goodell. Rodney attended schools in Midland, graduating from H. H. Dow High School in 1983.

Rodney proudly served his country, serving in the U.S. Army, being deployed in Desert Storm and served with the Grayling and Midland National Guard Units. He earned an associate's degree in Fire Science from Delta College, and served the City of Midland as a firefighter, retiring in 2013 as a Lieutenant.

Rodney married the former Kim (Walter) Merrill Oct. 3, 1998 in Midland. Rodney also served on the Mills Township Board as a Trustee, the Township Code Authority as a Treasurer, and was a long time member of Bethel Church of the Nazarene, and a former member of the Mills Township Fire Department and the Midland American Legion Berryhill Post # 165. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family (especially his grandchildren).

Surviving in addition to his wife Kim of 17 years and father, Richard, are two sons, William (Ashley) Merrill, Steven (Stefanie) Merrill, all of Midland; grandchildren, Billy and Kennedy Merrill; brother, Ryan (Rocky) Sweet of Independence, Mo.; sisters, Robin (Dan) Brown and Candy (Rudy Rezler) Goodell, sister-in-law, Robin Walter, brothers-in-law, Dorr (Tania) Walter and Jeff Walter, all of Midland; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 26, 2016, from the Memorial Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. Wallace H. Mayton III will officiate, with burial in New Calvary Cemetery. Rodney's family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler St. on Thursday, from 2-8 p.m., and at the church on Friday, from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Military honors will be presented by the Midland Area Veterans and the Department of U.S. Army, along with Fire Department honors being presented by the Midland City Fire Department. The family would like to thank Americans Hospice for their excellent care during a very difficult time. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider Rodney's family.
