Son of Andrew Jackson Whitman, a brother of the poet Walt Whitman, and of an Irish immigrant named Ann (nickname Nancy).

In 1865 in the NYS Census Andrew, age 1 year and 3 mos, was living in Brooklyn with his widowed mother, Ann, whose occupation was listed as "laundress," and brothers James age 6 and George age 4. Ann was listed as the mother of 3 children and as unable to read and write. As the 1865 NYS Census for Brooklyn was taken in June, Andrew was likely born March 1864, which is consistent with a death date for his father of December 3 1863.

Andrew's death certificate was filled out by the Kings County coroner because he died from violence. It reads:
"This is to certify that John H.B. Smith coroner in & for the county of this (10th) day of (Sep 1868) held an inquest on the body of (Andrew Whitman) Aged (4) y (6) mo Native of (US) found at (155 Navy St.) That in the (11th) Ward of said city and county that he has resided (life) years

The words in parentheses were filled out in handwriting, the rest were printed forms.

The cemetery claims that there are 4 people buried in his plot, one of whom was Andrew's brother George (died Sept 1872), but no marker for any of the Whitman family could be found. The cemetery confirmed that little Andrew's burial record corresponds to burial number 23118 (formerly online).
