The cemetery confirmed that burial number 12859 corresponds to the "Andrew J. Whitman," who died Dec 3 1863 according to his Brooklyn death certificate. He was the brother of the poet Walt Whitman, and was named Andrew Jackson Whitman. The family nickname for him was apparently "Bunkum."

In the 1860 US Census Andrew was enumerated as living in Brooklyn, Ward 11, with wife Nancy (a nickname for Ann) and their one-year-old son James. Before joining the army, James was a carpenter. James joined the Union Army, NY Regiment 13 Co. H on May 28 1862 and spent three months there. Like many other Civil War soldiers he returned plagued by alcoholism and illness, possibly tuberculosis. Likely he died of the illness he contracted in the army.

In the 1865 NYS Census his widow, Ann, was living in Ward 11 of Brooklyn with 3 sons, James age 6, George age 4 and Andrew age 1 year 3 months. She was enumerated as an illiterate native of Ireland, working as a laundress. She may have also worked as a prostitute after her husband's death.

Andrew's death certificate was written out entirely long-hand rather than being a printed form filled out by hand which was more common in Brooklyn by then. It reads:

"Brooklyn Dec 4 1863

This is to certify that Andrew J Whitman* died at no. 122 Portland Avene December 3d Born in -- US Aged 38 years -- months -- days color white nativity of parents -- cause of death laryngitis

John A Brodie MD"

The -- represents spaces on the certificate which were apparently never filled in.

The letter 'J' and number '38' were written in much lighter ink, apparently added after the initial certificate was written out.

* Although FamilySearch has the name "Andrew Whitman Jr" this is an error, as no 'Jr' appears after 'Whitman'
