He received many awards and medals including Detachment Commander of the Year in the European theater in 1974.

Edgar retired in Biloxi, Mississippi, where he and his wife had a custom cabinetry, antique restoration and contracting business for 17 years. Additionally, he worked as a recruiter for the Job Corp in Gulfport, MS to give back to his community. They built a dream home by hand on the Back Bay of Biloxi, where he sat with his beautiful wife and watched the sunsets in the gazebo by the water. He served as an Elder at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for many years. Edgar and Judy decided to travel across the United States and Alaska in their 5th wheel for 17 years. They served in Laborers for Christ building Lutheran Church additions and Schools, in Montana, Wyoming, Kansas and Indiana. Their last project was restoring a church in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. After touring America, they built a house in Rapid City with his handcrafted custom-made cabinetry. Besides woodworking, Edgar also enjoyed gardening, carving with Haycamp Wood Carving Club, writing poetry, drawing, painting and serving the Lord.
