Obituary from Saint Johns News, 9 May 1907, p. 10:

Westphalia: Joseph Nurenberg Dead, Carried Mail from Fowler for Twelve Years.

Joseph Nurenberg, who has lived for the most of his life in this vicinity, died last week, Wednesday morning, from dropsy at the home of his daughter Mrs. Jacob Gensterblum. He had been ill for about five months with Bright's disease. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Gensterblum and Mrs. John Martin. Mr. Nurenberg was a veteran of the civil war, and afterwards was in the service of the government in carrying the mails from Fowler to Westphalia, having held the star route contract for that route for twelve years. After leaving the mail service he sold his property here and lived for a time with his daughter Mrs. Gensterblum, soon after moving to St. Johns where he lived until about six months ago when on account of ill health he again made his home with his daughter. Mrs. Nurenberg died in 1900.

Family: Emma 1858-1921, married John Martin); Maria Anna 1858-1920, married Jacob Gensterblum; Elizabeth (1961-1870); and Maria Elizabeth 1861 to bef. 1923, married Henry H. Altvater.

I, Joseph Nurenberg, desiring to volunteer as a Soldier in the Army of the United States for the term of three years, do declare that I am thirty seven years of age, that I have never been discharged from the United States service on account of disability or by sentence of a court-martial, or by order before the expiration of a term of enlistment; and I know of no impediment to my serving honestly and faithfully as a soldier for three years.

Joseph Nernburg, Private, of Captain Nixon's Company (F), of the 14th Regiment of the United States Vol. Infantry was enlisted by F. Holts at Corunna, Mich, on the 26th day of December 1863, to serve three years; he was born in Germany, is thirty-four (34) years of age, 5 feet 3 1/4 inches high, light complexion, brown eyes, dark hair, and by occupation when enlisted a farmer.

I certify that I have carefully examined the said Joseph Nernberg, of Captain Nixon's Company, and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of a gun shot wound on the left side, fracturing the crest of the Ilium. He received this wound while in line of duty at the Battle of Bentonville, N.C., March 20th, 1865. At present, he is totally disabled and unfit for the V.R. Corps.
