Visitation will be Tuesday, November 24 from 6~8pm at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper, Texas.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10am also at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home.
Graveside services will follow at Weeks Cemetery located off Hwy 255, north of Jasper in Newton County.
Ruth was born October 2, 1926 in Brookeland, Texas.
She graduated from Brookeland High School and Stephen F. Austin University with a Master’s Degree in Administration and McNeese University with a Master’s Degree in Library Science.
Ruth and R.A. Garlington married June 1, 1946. During her educational career, she was employed by school districts in Devers, Mauriceville, Vidor, Buna and Newton. During this time she was the secretary to Vidor and Buna Superintendents, a classroom teacher, high school librarian and high school supervisor. She retired from Newton ISD in May 1986 with 37 years in education.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, R.A. Garlington. She missed the love of her life and best friend every minute since his death on February 16, 2011. She was also preceded in death by her father Henry Jackson (Brink) Powell, mother Nellie Leona Bell Powell, step-mother Hallie Bell Powell, sister Ola Lee and husband Tom, brother Elmer Powell, sister Iva Franks and husband K.T., sister-in-law Carolyn Powell, brother Thomas Weldon (Bill) Powell and brother Alfred Henry (Jack) Powell.
Her survivors include her daughter Linda Cryer and husband John of Lufkin, daughter Brenda McDaniel of Evadale and son Robert Garlington and wife Stacey of Nacogdoches, Texas and Springdale, Arkansas.
Other family members include her brother James Herbert Powell and wife Annette of Carthage, Texas, brother Hollis Powell of Pasadena, Texas, brother Glen Powell and wife Ginger of Spring, Texas, sister Doris Barlow of Pineland, Texas, sister-
-in-law Charlotte Powell of Brookeland and brother Charles Wayne Powell and wife Laurie of Spring.
Grandchildren are Chris Cryer and his wife Amy Marie of Lufkin, Texas, Amy Lin King and her husband Stephen of Lufkin, Taylor Wiesner and her husband Joseph of Dallas, Chelsea Garlington of Seattle, Washington and Ty Garlington of Nacogdoches, Texas and Springdale, Arkansas. She had seven great grandsons: Colton, Cason, Camdon and Corbon Cryer, Brett and Cade King, Eli Wiesner, plus many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church of Jasper. She enjoyed being with her family and friends and working in her flower beds and was always so proud of her roses and beautiful flowers. She will be greatly missed.
