Private Benjamin Mathews served in Co. H, 16th Regiment Georgia Infantry along with his brother James A. Mathews. He was severely wounded in the Battle of Crampton's Gap, also called the Battle of Burkittsville, on 14 Sept 1862, and must have died in the field hospital there. A newspaper article titled "Names of Confederate Soldiers Who Died at Burketsville" that appeared in the Southern Confederacy (Atlanta, GA) on 8 Nov 1862 included his name, "B. Mathews." It said that he was of "Company F, 16th Ga Regt, died Sept 28th" and one page of his CSA file does say Co. F. All others say however that he served in Co. H. (He was the only Mathews whose given name started with a B in the 16th Georgia Regiment.)

In 1874, when the graves of Confederate soldiers in Frederick County were moved to Washington Cemetery in Hagerstown, Benjamin's was one of the few still identifiable in Burkittsville. His name was included in "Bowie's List" as "Benj. Mathews, Co. F, 16th Georgia."
