Cicero Sterling, 82, of San Mateo died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at his residence.
A native of Ville Platte, La., he had been a resident of the Palatka area for the past 54 years. He was an U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and saw active wartime duty in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. From his youth in Hodge, Louisiana, and following his stint of military service, he earned a reputation as a "bull-of-the-woods" paper maker having worked nearly all his life in the pulp and paper manufacturing industry. He came to Palatka to work construction on the local paper mill and was employed here by the Hudson Pulp and Paper Corp. from its beginnings until his retirement in 1979. He retired as a shift foreman of the No. 2 paper machine after 32 years of continuous service. He was a longtime member of St. James United Methodist Church in Palatka where he was a member of the Chancel Choir, the Westbury Sunday School class, and the United Methodist Men. He gave volunteer service as a little league baseball coach in the 1970's, and actively supported the athletic programs of Briarwood School in the 1970's. In the years since his retirement, he contributed his time and talents performing maintenance, making repairs and conducting a myriad of beneficial building projects for his family, friends and his church.
Four brothers, Monroe, Ray, R. O., and Pete preceded him in death.
One son and daughter-in-law, Maurice and Dottie Tucker Sterling, one sister, Ruth South, and one grandson, David Sterling, all of Palatka; one nephew, Westley Sterling on Thibodaus, La.; and one niece, Cindy Sterling Brewster of Jacksonville Beach, Fl., survive him.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at St. James United Methodist Church with Rev. Hardy B. Sandlin III officiating. Entombment will follow in Palatka Memorial Gardens with military honors given by the U.S. Navy.
Masters Funeral Home in Palatka is handling arrangements. (Palatka Daily News Obituary dtd 28 May 2001.)
