Bertie Calhoun, 94, of Benton, passed from this life on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at the Haven Nursing Center in Columbia.

She was born October 21, 1920 in Cooke County, Texas, to the union of Roy and Greta Stevens Speake.

Mrs. Calhoun was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Shreveport. She was a past chairman for the Board of Appeals for the Benton Metropolitan area.

She was also a past president of the Greater Bossier Toastmasters Club.

Mrs. Calhoun was a former member of the National Association of Female Executives and was a former chairman of the Commission on Foundation of Evergreen and was a past parliamentarian of the Cypress Area Garden Club.

Services were held at 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 12, at Spring Valley Cemetery in Gainesville, Texas, with Rev. Brian Rankin officiating.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Margaret Annell Rankin; brothers, Sterling Speake, Roy Herman Speake, Jr. and Robert Speake; sisters, Mildred Hundley, Mary Katherine Martin and Gladys Sparkman; and granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Rankin.

Survivors include two grandchildren; brother, Claude Speake; sisters, Bette Anderson and Shirley (Joe) Kennemer and Greta Sue Wylie; four great grandchildren, two great great grandsons, and numerous nieces and nephews.
