on June 23 1922, Warren Lewis, a mentally retarded field hand, aged 18, was hanged by another Montgomery County mob who accused him of trying to assault a white woman. His family said his only crime was that he went to the woman’s well to get some water and was too simple-minded to foresee the consequences. The sheriff of Montgomery County claimed that by the time he arrived at the scene, it was too late to save Lewis’ life.
