He was born March 25, 1927 in Mcleansboro, Illinois to Willis Smith and Jewell Louis (Parmley) Kinnear. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Arthur "Art" Smith of Springfield, and sister Rosalie (Smith) Morgan of Bolivia.
Gene founded Smith Septic in 1963.
Gene is survived by 6 sons Eddie Ray, Jackie Ray, Willis Ray,and Gene Smith of Springfield, IL, Roger Smith, of Pawnee, IL, and Mark Smith of Rochester, IL; 4 daughters Peggy Jo (John) Cook of Salisbury, IL, Charlett (Jim) Fortner, Margaret (Scott) Lindsay of Pheonix, AZ, and Linda Cleghorn, many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Gene was cremated by Lincoln Land Cremation and ashes were given to a family member.
