Tony Lara was a crabbing veteran, who had his own freighting business. For 10 years, he worked on the Cornelia Marie in the 1990s. He ran the boat for salmon tendering. According to the Discovery website, Tony was a good friend to Phil Harris. He and Phil built the Cornelia Marie into being the crabbing boat that fans came to know on the "Deadliest Catch" series. As a captain, Tony knew every inch of the Cornelia Marie, from the engine room to the helm, to what goes on deck. When Phil Harris died in 2010, The boys asked Derrick Ray to take Phil's place. However, Derrick didn't work out well with the crew, so Josh cut ties with him. He asked Tony Lara to come on board to replace Derrick Ray as the captain of the Cornelia Marie. Tony was the one captain that Jake and Josh felt more at ease with, and Tony fit well with the rest of the crew. Tony won viewers hearts with his loving, but firm guidance as he taught Josh to run a successful crab boat and keep everyone safe.
