Samuel was a Physician. He married Mary Ann Weaver, who gave birth to 8 children, 5 of whom were still living in 1890. Samuel was the son of Adam Lantz and Eleanor "Nellie" Sheetz. In the 1860 through the 1890 census records, they lived in Mound, McDonough, Illinois.

In Memorian
"Dr. Samuel Lance was born in Maryland Dec. 31st, 1818, and died July 30th, 1890, aged 71 years, 6 months and 29 days. Dr. Lance lived near the place of his birth until manhood, when he emigrated to Ohio, where he met and married Mary A. Weaver. In 1840, after a year's residence in Ohio, they removed to Marietta, Fulton county, Illinois, where they lived fifteen years, when they came to their home one mile east of New Philadelphia, McDonough county, where he resided at the time of his death. Dr. Lance was a successful practitioner for more than forty years. A man of pure notions and unsullied character; a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church for 35 years. For more than 5 years Dr. Lance was a great sufferer from nervous paralysis, and for three days previous to his death was unconscious. On last Wednesday evening he peacefully entered his reward. His funeral occurred on Friday from the Mound M. E. church, where a funeral sermon was preached by his pastor from the words, "A great man fallen this day in Israel," after which his remains were laid to rest in the church cemetery. Thus a kind husband, an indulgent father, a respected citizen, a loyal friend and a child of God rests peacefully from his labors, and his works do follow him. He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his loss, and await the call to a reunion above. Wm. H. Cooper" (Macomb Journal, Aug 7, 1890, page 8, Column 2)
