Cenotaph
Church Photo
This is a sideview photo of the cenotaph in front of the church. In this photo look to the far right. This United Methodist Church was originally located about 1¼ miles east and named the Grove.
His father Benjamin Arnold Sr.
Bio states he married Ann Bogardus in 1689 in King and Queen County, VA.
I have read numerous disclaimers this is untrue.
Apparently, Ann Bogardus only resided in New York.
The cenotaph lists 58 names of the Revolutionary Solders & Heroines in the Lebanon Methodist Church and Cemetery erected by D.A.R.
Below are my known family on the cenotaph:
1. Col Benjamin Arnold (Fifth Grandfather)
7. Capt Thomas Hamilton Son-in-Law (Wife Temperance Arnold Hamilton)
8. Sgt George Martin Son-in-Law (Wife Charity Arnold Martin unconfirmed)
24. Hendrick Arnold Son (Fifth Great Uncle)
25. Thomas Hendrick Arnold Son (Fourth Grandfather)
26. Temperance Arnold Hamilton Daughter (Husband Capt Thomas Hamilton)(Fifth Great Aunt)
27. Charity Arnold Martin Daughter (Husband Sgt George Martin unconfirmed) (Fifth Great Aunt)
28. Ann Hendrick Arnold Wife (Fifth Grandmother)
55. Benjamin Arnold Sr. Father (Sixth Grandfather)
Following the end of the Revolutionary War, settlers migrated south along the Great Wagon Road, establishing their new homes. In Upcountry South Carolina, they made their livelihood by farming and trading. In three successive years, not long after their arrival, the citizenry founded the Lebanon Methodist Church (1785), the Fairview Presbyterian Church (1786) and the Reedy River Baptist Church (1787). Thus began a long period of dominance by these three religious groups in the lifestyle of the Upcountry.
