Dr. Schmidt was born in Chicago on November 28, 1935, the son of Gilbert and Jeanne D. (Halowe) Schmidt. He married Nancy Jackson of Batavia on June 13, 1959.
Dr. Schmidt graduated from Illinois College in Jacksonville in 1958, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Korea from 1958 to 1960. He taught general and physical science at Lakewood Junior High School in Dundee for a year. He graduated from the University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago. He was an Aviation Medical Examiner. He was on the Board of the Mental Health Center of LaSalle County. He had been president and a board member of the Mid-State Foundation for Medical Care. He was a member of the illinois Academy of Family Practice, the American Academy of Family Practice, and the Illinois State Medical Society. In 1990 he was awarded IAFP president's award and served on the ISMS governing council. In 1998 was apointed by Governor Edgear to the Illinois Medical Licensing Board. He was in Family Practice with the Ottawa Medical Center from 1996 to 2001 and was currently with the Will County Community Health Clinic in Joliet.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Schmidt; by a daughter, Pam (Michael) Sammons of Tipp City, Ohio; and by two grandchildren.
A son, Steven Schmidt, died previously.
