Conductor, Musician. Born in Posen, Prussian (now Poznań, Poland), he founded first the New York Oratorio Society in 1873, then the New York Symphony in 1878 (now known as the New York Philharmonic). He led the orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera House, and is credited with bringing German opera to New York City, New York.
