Military Figure. He was a powerful Irish politician and military officer. Born into a protestant family of 11 children, he was educated in France and at Christ Church in Oxford. Upon his father's death on July 30, 1680, he became Baron Butler in the English peerage and the 7th Earl of Ossory in the Irish Peerage The 2nd Duke of Ormonde, he served against the Duke of Monmouth and commanded a regiment of horse guards at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. Butler was Viceroy of Ireland from 1703 to 1707 and 1710 to 1713. Appointed captain-general in 1711, he was impeached in June of 1715 for complicity in unauthorized peace talks with the French. Butler fled the country and spent the rest of his life in exile, first in Spain but mostly in France. His titles and estates were lost. He married twice. With his first wife, he had a daughter but both died. As a widower he remarried in an arranged marriage and the couple had a son and two daughters.
