Jason Choate was my Paternal G-G-G-Grandfather who was born a slave. Census records from 1860 to 1889 have him recorded as Mulatto (African American,Caucasian). In 1900 census records have him recorded as African American (Black). Jason's last name was sometimes spelled Shoat. I wish I could have known him; information from the news paper shows he was quite a man. News paper article printed in 1901; republished from Newspapers.com ;copyrighted 2014.
