James Dougherty, a prominent iron founder and one of the oldest members of the Union League, died at his home, 2212 Green street, yesterday. He was 85 years old. During the Civil War when General Lee invaded Pennsylvania Mr. Dougherty was among the first to respond to Governor Curtin's call for troops and raised a company from the industrial works in which he was interested. He was a manger of the House of Refuge, a member of the board of directors of the Finance Company, identified with the Franklin Institute since 1841, and a member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania".
