Charles Edwin Cole was a printer by trade, having learned the trade with his father, Charles E. Cole, who published the Maryland Union in Frederick, Maryland until his death in 1882. After his father's death, Charles was a compositor on the Examiner until 1903 when he was obliged to retire due to failing health. He was a nephew of William G. Cole, who was Mayor of Frederick from 1859 to 1865 during the Civil War. Charles married Mary Catherine Nichols of Frederick on 26 November 1869. They were married by the Rev R. Hinkle. Charles was a life-long resident of Frederick, living at 22 East 5th Street, and a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and of the Junior Steam Fire Engine Company. The day of his death he suffered a stroke while sitting on the porch of the home of his daughter, Clara, and while holding his grandson, Craig Weller, in his lap. He was known for his sterling character and kind and congenial disposition. The 1870 Federal census lists Charles and wife mary living in Frederick, Charles as a printer and Mary keeping house. (1870 census states married in Sept 1869). Nearby live Mary's brother, Charles and his wife Louisa. In the 1900 Federal Census Charles, listed as a "Compositor", was living at 22 (listed here from only the previous page as North Market Street but it is known that the family home was at 22 East 5 th Street). He owns his home but has a mortgage. Living at home is wife, Mary, and children Harry, Frank, George W., and Mary R. along with his brother William D. J. (Jenks). Harry is a barber, Frank is a salesman while George W. and Mary are at school and brother Jenks is also a compositor. From The News (Frederick, MD) 22 August, 1905: Mr. Charles Edward (Edwin) Cole suffered a stroke of parallysis yesterday evening about 5 o'clock, while sitting on the porch at the home of his daughter Mrs. Walter Weller, South Market Street. At the time of the stroke he had his grandchile Kreig (Craig) Weller, upon his lap and was rocking with it in his arms, and fell to the pavement about two feet from the floor of the porch, striking the right side of his head near the temple, inflicting a small gash. Fortunately, the child suffered no injury. Dr. H.F. Getzendanner was summoned, but found that the worst was to be expected, and Mr. Cole passed peacefully away at 8:15 o'clock without regaining consciousness. Mr. Cole was a son of the late Charles Cole, and was a printer by trade, having learned the trade with his father, who published the Maryland Union in this citiy for a number of years, until his death in 1882. Mr. Cole was afterward a compositor on the Examiner until about two years ago., when his health broke down, and he was obiged to retire. He has, however, occasionally followed his vocation within the past year. He was a nephew of the late William G. Cole, who was Mayor of Frederick from 1862 to 1865. Mr. Cole was 58 years of age last April and had been a life long resident of this city. His sterling character and kind and congenial disposition had won for him many warm friends, who will regret to learn of his unexpected death. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran church and of the Junior Steam Fire Engine Company. He is survived by seven children - Messrs. Charles E. Cole, Frank W. Cole and Mrs. Walter Weller, of this city, Mrs. Edward Knisell, Mr. G. William Cole. And Miss Mamie R. Cole, of Glassboro, N.J., and Mr. Harry W. Cole, of Washington. He is also survived by a brother, Mr. W. D. Jenks Cole, of this city. From The News (Frederick, MD) 23 August, 1905: The funeral of Mr. Charles Edwin Cole will take place tomomrrow morning at 10 o'clock. Services will be held at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Weller, South Market street, and interment will be made at Mr. Olivert cemetery. In the absence of the pastor, the sesrvices will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Marion J. Kline. From The News (Frederick, MD) 224August, 1905: The funeral of Mr. Charles Edwin Cole took place from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Weller, South Market Street, at 1o o ' clock this morning. Services were conducted at the house by Rev Dr. Marion J. Kline. The pallbearers were John Ed. Schell, A.H. Harrington, Edward Killian, O. C. Warehime, Frank Suman and Augustus Fromke. Interment was made in Mr. Tolvet cemetery. C. C. Carty was the funeral director.
