WELLING -- Services for Darrell Eugene Scott, age 61, were held on Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at 2 p.m. at the Hart Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Caney Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Hart Funeral Home.

Darrell Scott was born one of two sons to Joe Columbus and Mildred Eleanor (Burnett) Scott on May 4, 1944 in Stilwell, and passed from this life on Jan. 6 in Welling.

Darrell attended school at Stilwell and later graduated. On May 7, 1965, Darrell married the love of his life, Mary Sanders, at Caney General Baptist Church. To this union, four children were born.

Darrell worked in law enforcement his entire career. He began his career with Burns Detective Agency and the City of Tahlequah as a detective. From 1980 to 1985, Darrell served Cherokee County as sheriff. During his tenure, he organized the mounted patrol, and was instrumental in helping to obtain cars and uniforms for the officers and utilizing the volunteer police officers.

When he finished his job as sheriff, he began working for the Scenic Rivers Tourism and Recreation Department as a park ranger, and also worked security for Caney Creek Farms and was employed by John Nichols. Darrell finished his working career as the bakery manager at Wal-Mart until his retirement in 2002.

Darrell was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Sertoma, raising money for community events, the Board of Trustee of Caney Cemetery and Caney General Baptist Church, where he attended, and had the distinction of being the youngest sheriff to ever serve in Cherokee County. His story was published in the Maste Detective Magazine.

Darrell loved his horses and riding the hills. He loved camping, fishing, hunting, playing softball and basketball and, generally, sports of all kinds. But to Darrell, there was nothing more precious than time spent with his wife, children and grandchildren. Darrell will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.

Darrell is preceded in death by his grandparents, his mother and father and one daughter, Myra Eugenea Scott, in 1968.

Darrell leaves to cherish the memory of his wife Mary, of the home; three special children, Mary Dianna and Darryl King of Stilwell, John Eugene and Julie Scott of Tahlequah and Wesley Dale and Crystal Scott of Welling; one brother, John Wayne and Linda Scott of Westville; 10 adored grandchildren, Samantha, Katelyn, Jennifer, Julia, Brittany, Christopher, Madelyn, Nicholas, Cynthia and Orion; and many cousins and a host of friends and co-workers.

Those wishing to extend their sympathies are asked to consider the American Cancer Society, 5110 S. Yale St., 101, Tulsa, Okla., 74135.
