Arvid was born in Stansvik, Rönnäng, a son of August and Anna Helena Gustavsson. Arvid and his wife, Alma were married May 20, 1917 in Stansvik, and became the parents of three children: Alf, Kurt and Ethel Gustavsson. Their daughter, Ethel, made the arrangements for the beautiful gravestone for her parents and grandparents, shown in the photo. Arvid was a naturally talented diesel mechanic and worked for a time in the United States although his family remained in Sweden. He was employed by Albert Wheeler Johnson of New York to care for his large diesel yacht, the "Nicoya", making trips up and down the Atlantic coastline as far south as Key West, Florida. Arvid was frequently able to visit the family of a brother who had permanently immigrated to the United States, Charles Gustafson, of Portland, Connecticut, and his visits were welcomed with enthusiasm by his American nieces and nephews, who remembered him fondly.
