Soap manufacturer. He was born at Megagissey, Cornwell and spent most of his early life on the family farm, before leaving for London, at the age of about 18. He trained and worked as a barber in Soho. Many of his customers being affluent, he soon was making a good living in the capital. His trade helped him recognize a need for a pure and gentle soap. In 1789, he researched, developed and marketed the first of high quality transparent soap. This unique clear soap was an immediate success. Pears soap can still be identified by its unique image today.
