TWO KILLED WHEN FLIER HITS AUTO SATURDAY NOON

MAN AND WOMAN MEET DEATH AS WOLVERINE DEMOLISHES CAR.

ON DIVISION-RD. CROSSING

SLIPPERY PAVEMENT BLAMED FOR DOUBLE TRAGEDY SATURDAY NOON.

When their car skidded into the path of the inbound Wolverine flier at the Division-rd. crossing of the Michigan Central a mile south of the city about 12:45 Saturday, Walter Champion, about 40 years of age and his wife, about the same age, were killed.

The car, Ford touring, was demolished and the bodies of the occupants were carried along the track about 200 feet.

Mr. and Mrs. Champion resided on Dennis-rd. about two miles south of the city.

AUTO HEADED SOUTH.

The automobile was proceeding south on Division-rd. and according to the story of Engineer W.H. Hunt and Fireman L.R. Long of Jackson, the operator attempted to stop but the car skidded on the slippery pavement and stalled in the path of the train which was running at a rate of from 50 to 55 miles an hour.

The car was carried to Buchanan-av., a distance of a quarter of a mile, the body of the man being carried about 200 feet and the body of the woman about 150 feet.

Conductor William Cockran was in charge of the train.

According to Engineer Hunt, he was whistling for the crossing and the operator of the car heard the whistle and attempted to stop, but in vain.
