US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served the State of Illinois' 13th (1969 to 1973), 12th (1973 to 1993) and 8th Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives. His father was a physician, Philip attained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hillsdale College and following service with the United States Army, he earned a Ph.D. from Indiana University. Crane succeeded Donald Rumsfeld (who went on to serve in the Nixon Administration) in Congress and during his tenure, he established himself as a top Conservative in the Republican Party. He will perhaps be best remembered for opposing the Panama Canal Treaty (1977) during the Carter Administration. In 1980, Crane ran an unsuccessful bid to secure the Republican Party's nomination for President, which would go to Ronald Reagan. Crane died from lung cancer.
