Jacob was the son of John Bonawitz (b. 1806) and Susannah Shily (b. cir. 1811).

He enlisted in Co. A, 143rd PA Vol Reg at Wilkes-Barre in 1862. He was wounded at Gettysburg July 1, 1863. He mustered out in 1865 as a corporal.

Jacob and Emma married on July 4, 1865 at the First M.E. Church of Wilkes-Barre. They had a son and a daughter. He became a coal miner at West Nanticoke.
