According to the baptismal records of St John the Baptist Church in Dayton, MN, the correct birth date for Alex is Sept 12, 1887. He changed his birth date prior to WW1.

He was the son of Joseph Sr. and Maggie (Marguerite Violette) Vassar. Survived by wife Blanche Vassar, son Alexander Wallace Vassar and Margaret Jeannette Vassar (Vrieling), step son Robert W. Vassar predeceased him in 1995; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was one of the North Dakota Military Men during World War I, inducted at Dickinson, MN on March 16, 1918 at the age of 31 years of age; sent to Logan, CO; served in the Coast Artillery Corps, Fort Winfield Scott, California, to May 15, 1918; Truck Company E, Artillery Park, Coast Artillery Corps, 1st Area, to discharge. Grade: Private First Class, Dec. 10, 1918; Wagoner, March 21, 1919; overseas from June 29, 1918, to May 2, 1919. Engagements: Offensives: St. Mihiel; Meuse-Argonne. Honorably Discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa on June 16, 1919, as a Wagoner.
Alex had several brothers: Joseph Jr., Alfred, Paul Frank, Theophile,Prosper, he also had several sisters, Mary, Elizabeth, Rosie, Flora, and Tallie (Stella), and Georgiana (died in at age 4 years) After Alex's mother died in childbirth on March 22, 1897, the child was stillborn; his father Joseph Sr. remarried to Jane (Eugenia)Plant and they had three more children, Frederic, Theophile, and Archibald.
Alex's first wife Josephine and daughter Florence who are believed to have died in the 1918 pandemic. It was after the death of Josephine and child Florence that he joined the US Army during WW1 and later married Ethel Louise Bond upon his return from the war. Alex and Ethel had two children, Alexander Wallace, and Margaret Jeannette. Ethel, his second wife had a son Robert prior to their marriage. Ethel and Alex were later divorced and he remarried to Blanche Fry on May 21, 1941. Blanche raised Alex's
children from the prior marriage.
