After working for eighteen years as a clerk in the Railway Clearing House he became an antiquarian bookseller in parterner with an Exeter friend, Elkin Mathews. He then founded the Bodley Head publishing house, whose imprint honoured Sir Thomas Bodley, an illustrious Devonian and founder of the Bodleian Library at Oxford. His list included many of the most famous literary figures of the day: Max Beerbohm, Baron Corvo, Anatole France and William John Locke.
