Ann B. Kent, 84, of Falmouth Massachusetts passed away after a short illness at Bourne Manner Extended Care facility in Buzzards Bay, MA on Friday, September 5th, 2014.

Ann was born on August 16th, 1930 in Walton, New York. She was the youngest child of James C “Bud” Burrhus and Evalyn Payne Burrhus.

Ann attended the Walton Central Schools and graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1948. In 1952, she graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics. She married James Kent (Jim), who grew up two doors down from her in Walton, on August 15th 1953. For many years, Ann busied herself with raising a family of three boys and with establishing and running a thriving custom drapery business as part of RJ Kent & Son (Kent’s) on Delaware Street. When her youngest son started school, she embarked on a career as an educator. She earned a Master’s Degree in Education from SUNY Oneonta and she taught Special Education at the Townsend School until her retirement in the 1990s. After Jim’s death in 2003, Ann lived until her death on Cape Cod with her oldest son David.

Ann was very active in the United Presbyterian Church of Walton, serving as an Elder and as a member of the choir. One organization that Ann refused to join as a young lady was the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. As Ann told it, when her mother and her mother’s friends failed to enlist her, someone said: “Well, if we can’t get Ann Kent to join, we might as well shut down!” And they promptly did.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother 1st Lt James C Burrhus Jr a B25 Bomber pilot in WWII and her beloved husband James “Jim” Salton Kent. She is survived by her sons David Kent of Falmouth Massachusetts, Stephen Kent and his wife Rebecca of Woodland California, John Kent and his wife Leslie of Hayward California as well as grandchildren Angela, Kaitlin, Christopher, James and Riley Kent
