Major League Baseball Player. His tragic death, the result of a line drive to the head prompted baseball to make mandatory the usage of batting helmets to be worn by all field coaches. Born Michael Robert Coolbaugh, he was raised in Texas where he attended Roosevelt High School and participated on football and basketball, in addition to baseball. He was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 16th round of the 1990 Amateur Draft. After more than a decade of Minor League experience in which he produced standout numbers, he marked his Major League debut with the Milwaukee Brewers on July 12, 2001. He played in 39 games that season mainly as a third baseman and recorded 14 hits. The following season (2002), he briefly played with the St. Louis Cardinals. At the time of his death on July 22, 2007, he was serving as the first base coach with the Tulsa Drillers. He was the younger brother of former Major League player Scott Coolbaugh.
