Matts Mattson, Old Time Resident, Passed Away

The community was shocked when it was learned that Matts Mattson
had passed away at the Good Samaritan hospital in Fremont at 8:05
Monday morning. He had been taken to the hospital Saturday about
one o'clock, after a sinking spell and accident at his home here
that morning. He had complained of not feeling well Friday
afternoon, so Saturday morning his brother John Mattson went to see
how he was feeling and found him sitting on a chair but still
undressed. He had gotten up and tried to dress, but fell to the
floor. He tried it a second time with the same result. He
succeeded in pulling himself up to the chair, where he was found by
his brother and placed in bed. Dr. Heine of Hooper was called, who
examined him, but was unable to ascertain if any bones were broken
so Wollmer and Warne's ambulance was called and he was taken to the
hospital at Fremont for an X-ray examination, and it was found a
bone in one hip had been broken. Due to his advanced age and his
already weakened condition the shock was too much for him and he
passed away as above stated. Matts Mattson was born in Dalarne,
Sweden, September 30, 1856 and died in Fremont September 26, 1938,
at the age of 81 years 10 months and 26 days. He spent his early
boyhood in Sweden and at the age of 8, he started with his parents,
brother and sisters across the Atlantic Ocean. In those days it
required seven weeks to make the trip. The family arrived in Omaha
in the year 1865 making their home there until they came the
vicinity known as Swaburg in the year 1870, where the greater part
of his life was spent.

After the death of his parents, the most of the time he made his
home in Uehling, the past few years alone in his cottage on Main
Street. Two brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.
Surviving are his brother, John Mattson of Uehling, four nieces and
nine nephews, and 15 grand nephews and nieces and 8 greatgrand
nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held this (Thursday)
afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Congregational church. The pastor,
Mrs. Derelle Barber, will officiate. Wollmer & Warne, Hooper
morticians will be in charge. Interment will be the Baptist
cemetery, south of town.
