My paternal Great Great Grandfather. John Choate was considered a Mulatto. (African American,Caucasian). He fought during the Civil War for the Union forces under the; First US. Colored Heavy Artillery Company K. His enlistment records shows he had black hair, black eyes, and yellowed skin, 5 feet 10 inches tall, and was 20 years old. John enlisted , at the same time as his Brothers, Jason"Jacob", and Samuel. After moving to Sumner,Co.TN. in the late 1800's he was considered Caucasian. (Copyright 2014 by: Donna Choate Sigmon)
