The 1870 census of Talladega County recorded the household of Henry and Hannah Isbell with their 14 yr. old daughter Jennette and his 85 yr. old mother, Jane Isbell (1781-1903), living within the city of Talladega. Henry Isbell was a 47 yr. old mulatto born in Virgina, with his 49 yr. old mulatto wife having been born in Tennessee. Their daughter had been born in Alabama, and was attending school. His mother, racially categorized as black, had been born in Virginia. The Isbell family lived next door to the city mayor, Henry H. Hamill (1821-1887), who was born in Pennsylvania and had been a sergeant in the county reserves of the Confederate States Army (CSA) during the war.
