The Unknown Soldier

I am the ‘Unknown Soldier' my grave is where I fell
I walk these lonely fields of death these battlefields of hell
The years they have not aged me nor time a fortress made
for time can not erase here where a million souls are laid.

I am the ‘Unknown Soldier' cut down through folly slain
no name no home no resting place so here I must remain
I am the symbol of a war a war that stands reviled
a war that stole my youth away and all my soul defiled.

I am the ‘Unknown Soldier' unknown I came and gave
my unknown life through unknown strife to this my unknown grave
No bullet now can hurt me nor shell my flesh now tear
the guns that wrent their carnage here are silent now laid bare.

Pity not my tortured soul but pity all mankind
for never was there sacrifice made total and so blind
These battlefields that took my life now tilled by passing plough
cannot hurt me anymore I'm in God's keeping now.

For though I have no resting place to war's eternal shame
I know in heaven when I am called that he will know my name
I'll walk forever these sad fields where fallen comrades lay
until my soul is sanctified and God calls me away.
