My 5th Great-Grandfather

Henry Harless, Sr. was the son of John Phillip (1716-1772)and Anna Margaretha (Preiss) Harless (1713-1784) and the husband of Charity Harless. His parents immigrated from Germany to Pennsylvania in 1738 and moved to Virginia where Henry grew up. During the American Revolution Henry served in three different Va. Militia companies, serving under Capt. James Byrne, Montgomery Co., Virginia; and Capts. J. Taylor and J. Preston. Henry's brothers David and Phillip also served under Capt. Byrne. Henry's current gravestone (placed about 1988), provided by the government and DAR as a result of the efforts of Mrs. Madaline Evans, is inscribed "Henry Harless, ALA Militia, Rev War, 1752-1815". After the war Henry was a Virginia farmer. About 1800 Henry moved his family to Knox County (now Anderson Co.), Tennessee where he lived and owned land from 1801 to 1811. Subsequently Henry and many of his family moved from Tennessee to Madison Co., Alabama which at that time was still the "Mississippi Territory" as the states of Alabama and Mississippi had not yet been created by the Congress. He settled a few miles northeast of the present town of Huntsville. His will, filed 1815 in Madison Co., Alabama names many of his children who had moved with him to Alabama. Henry's oldest son, David, who had also moved to Madison Co., AL died about the same time and his will is also on file in Madison Co.
