Joseph Bloomfield practiced law in Burlington, New Jersey and was the registrar of the admiralty court from 1779 to 1783. He served as the New Jersey Attorney General from 1783 to 1792 and as a trustee of Princeton College from 1793 until his death. He was elected Governor of New Jersey as a Republican and served in office from 1801–1802 and from 1803–1812.
Bloomfield was elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth United States Congress and reelected to the Sixteenth Congress from March 4, 1817 through March 3, 1821, where he represented New Jersey's At-large congressional district. Bloomfield ran for, but was not elected to, the Seventeenth Congress.
In A.D. 1796, what had been known as the Old First Church was formed and was named the Presbyterian Society of Bloomfield in honor of Joseph Bloomfield. When the Township of Bloomfield was formed, the name was taken from the name of the Presbyterian church. Also the College which is associated with Princeton.
After the death of his first wife, he married Isabella Ramsey (1779–1871), the daughter of John Ramsey.
Then A Colonel. Joseph Bloomfield (1753-1823) married Mary McIlvaine, (1752-1818) the daughter of William McIlvaine (1722-1770) a physician from Burlington, N.J. Her brother ,Col. Joseph McIlvaine (1749-1787) was the father of Joseph McIlvaine (1769-1826 ) whom they reared & they had no children. Joseph McIlvaine became United States Senator from N.J. 1823-1826 when he died. Mary McIlvaine Bloomfield's death is recorded in the Rochester, Monroe County, New York newspaper 1818 which I came across when I was looking up other information in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. They are buried in Saint Mary's Churchyard in Burlington, Burlington County, Jersey where your father Stephen Potter De Mallie and I went when the Bloomfield Joseph Bloomfield chapter DAR put a marker on the grave of Joseph Bloomfield in A.D. 1998 on the 125th anniversary of his being interred in the churchyard, and afterwards Lester Dunham from the SAR gave the main speech at our luncheon, and that is how I found the connection to Miss Anne Dunham, mother of now US President Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. as he calls himself. There are two lines who say that Miss Anne Dunham is descended through both. She is NOT a direct line to Joseph Bloomfield, but to the daughter of the immigrant ancestor Thomas Bloomfield whom you sent me Jonathan, and Joseph Bloomfield is descended through the son Ezekiel Bloomfield. Major Joseph Bloomfield chapter was founded on April 1, 1916 in Bloomfield, New Jersey. The organizing women took the name of Joseph Bloomfield because they were proud to bear the name of a New Jersey patriot who was distinguished in both war and peace. Joseph Bloomfield was a major during the American Revolution, and later a general in the War of 1812. He was governor of the state of New Jersey, and a member of Congress.
The township of Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey is named in his honor. He came to Bloomfield and delivered an address on A.D.(OS 07/04), July 6, 1797. In 1923, on the green where he spoke, the Major Joseph Bloomfield chapter dedicated a DAR plaque in his honor.
Joseph Bloomfield was/is buried in St. Mary's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Burlington, Burlington County, New Jersey. This beautiful, quaint, and historic church is a National Historic Landmark. On October 5, 1998 our chapter members held a rededication ceremony at this site on the 175th anniversary of his death.
