Scott was the fourth of six children born to George McClellan More and Fannie Elizabeth Barlow More. He was raised at Hobart where his father was first a marble dealer and later the owner and operator of a dairy farm. He relocated with his family to Pierstown, near Cooperstown, about 1915 where he farmed with his father and later for J. Mann Whipple. He relocated to Concord, Indiana about 1920 where he was a factory laborer; perhaps at the Crow-Elkhart Motor Company which closed in 1924. He then farmed with his father again at Pierstown. He relocated to Cooperstown about 1930 where he was engaged as a taxi service chauffeur. About 1935, he was employed at the Knox School which was quartered at Hotel Otesaga until it closed in 1954.
