He was a native of Swain County, but had lived in Clay County for most of his life. He was the son of the late Gaston and Carrie Laney Parris. He was a retired farmer and an accomplished craftsman, having made many types of musical instruments, including the guitar, dulcimer, fiddle, banjo, and mandolins most, of which he designed himself. He was heavily involved in assisting the Nelson family with the development of the Tusquittee Pioneer Village. He also hand crafted furniture and gunstocks. Gordon was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Elvia Cody Parris; and several nieces and nephews.
