Hospital helpers

On Wednesday, Oct. 2, 1996, The Union ran an article by Will Holbert. It said, "A lot of energy left Nevada County Monday with the death of Abe Tobis, a man friends remember as an industrious intellectual, devoted to improving life for all."

Mr. Tobis started the first recycling programs here in Nevada County and the mosquito fish program that is still in existence. Abe was also a teacher at Nevada Union. Gene Cooley said that he first heard the word "ecology" in Abe's class.

Well, Eugenia Tobis died on March 16 of this year. She was a great conservationist in her own right, as well as a nutritionist and orchestra musician.

I want to thank the people that Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital who knew Abe and Eugenia, my mom.

Abe was also a songwriter. An active member of the Baha'i Faith, he set to music a quotation from "Prayers and Meditations of Baha'u'llah," that he entitled: If It Be Thy Pleasure. (Ref: "The Baha'i World, Vol. XVII, 1976-1979")
