He was an intellectual, Spanish Aristocrat by marriage, academic, and literary editor. His academic training was developed to become a Jesuit priest, after leaving the priesthood held the positions of literary of the Taurus editorial director and director general of music of the Ministry of culture (1977-1980).On March 16, 1978 married Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart, 18th Duchess of Alba and head of the House of Alba.In 1986 went on to occupy the Chair "f" of the Royal Spanish Academy in replacement of Manuel de Terán Álvarez.On January 12, 2001 entered in the clinic of la Luz (Madrid), due to a localized cancer of larynx, and on May 11, at 17.15 hours, died from a pulmonary embolism in the Palace of Liria.
