Julia's father died when she was 14 years old. Soon after his death, she went to Houston to find a job and worked as a nanny for a clothing store family (The Battlesteins). She would travel by train to and from Hallettsville to Houston.
Julia loved flowers, especially roses and red lilies. She enjoyed baking homemade bread, canning and gardening. She enjoyed listening to Polka music. Julia and her husband Louis ranched and farmed tomatoes, cotton, corn, and milo.
Julia cooked 3 full meals a day, and baked 3 loaves of bread daily, except on Sunday's. On Sunday's the entire family went to Sunday mass together. Then nearly all remaining time on Sundays were spent visiting with the aunts, uncles, and cousins either with them coming to her house or family traveling to the relatives homes, and always dinner and lunch were served.
