Professional Golfer. His best known sports accomplishment was beating Ben Hogan in a playoff to capture the 1955 United States Open Tournament. He began his association with golf as a caddy while in high school and became an assistant pro during 1939, in his native Iowa. Fleck served with the United States Navy during World War II and was aboard a ship which provided cover fire and support for Allied troops during the invasion of France's beaches. His victory over Hogan is considered by many as being the greatest upset in PGA history. Fleck went on to win two more major tournaments, prior to retiring in 1963. He remained in the sport to work as a club pro.
