Singer. Often referred to as the "English Mario Lanza," he enjoyed widespread success as a popular tenor on television and the nightclub circuit in the United Kingdom during the 1970s. Born on the same day as Elvis Presley, he had an immediate attraction to music and learned to play the piano, clarinet, guitar and bagpipes during his youth. Following service with the Royal Army, Young embarked on his career as a performer, initially as part of an act with his younger brother. In 1971, he was recipient of the "Most Outstanding Vocal Act Award" by the "Stage and Television Today"and that year, he signed with the CBS label which resulted in the releasing of his first solo album "A Portrait of Robert Young." He went on to record four more albums during the 1970s and at the height of his popularity, he was an in-demand performer for numerous British TV programs. In 1975, he became the first British singer to be invited to perform in the Soviet Union. Young remained an active performer until he was stricken with dementia. He died of complication from pneumonia.
