Bithel was my grandmother Flossie's first love. She left home at age 18 to be with him. Her father was against her leaving home. Since she was the oldest he wanted her home to help take care of her younger siblings, and to help work the farm. He eventually found her and brought her home against her will.
A 1930 East St. Louis Directory shows Bithel and Flossie lived in East St. Louis under Bithel and Flossie Colston. I was never able to find an actual marriage certificate that showed Bithel and Flossie married. My grandmother must have been pregnant when she was brought back home. They had a child born on Nov. 5, 1928 in Ste. Genevieve. Lule Lee Colston was named after Bithel's mother (Lue) and Flossie's mother (Norma Lee). On Aug. 17, 1930 Lule Lee passed away in Ste. Genevieve. It must have been after Lule Lee's death that my grandmother left home again to be with Bithel.
They did everything they could to hide and live away from my grandmother's father. on Dec. 30, 1931, Bithel was found hung in a barn, it was ruled a suicide. However, his family stated they found a gunshot wound in the back of Bithel's head. Such a sad ending to this love story.
Back in the late 90's or early 2000's, Bithel's nephew brought my grandmother a large photo in a beautiful old frame of Bithel, the one you see here on this page. It has since been passed down to my father. I would like to meet this nephew someday.
*Note: Bithel's name on his death certificate is spelled Bythal Coston.
