Junior was the son of Goldie May Boling and Robert Smith Stanley. He joined the Navy at age 13, got all the way to Charleston, WV where a family friend recognized him at the recruitment office in Charleston and told the officer his real age. He went back to working full time on the railroad and at age 15 re-enlisted and this time he made it all the way through. He spent his 16th birthday at Great Lakes Illinois and later was stationed at the Naval "Italian Prisoner of War" Camp at Pasco, WA. He met Betty Jean Nelson while on a weekend pass and they were married 27 Aug 1945 in Kennewick, WA across the Columbia River from Pasco. They were both 16. Enthusiastic family and friends rolled them down Ave C (now Columbia Ave)in a wheelbarrow in what was called a shiveree. Junior loved to fish and play poker.
