Obit - Street - Death of a Popular Streetonian

It was with deep regret that people heard on Monday of the passing of Mr. Joseph Carey, who died at his home, No. 3, Bowling Green, aged 68 years. He would have celebrated his 69th birthday next month had he been spared. He had been suffering from an illness lasting a month. "Joe Carey," as he was more familiarly known to Street folk, was a personality. He had worked at the Avalon Leather Board Factory for upwards of 50 years, retiring about seven years ago on account of ill-health. He was a strong robust man in his younger days, played for the old "Dreadnought" Street football team, and took a great interest in other forms of sport. He took a keen interest in politics, and kept himself well informed. A Liberal in his younger days, he joined the Labour Party in the days of its early formation, and had been one of its keenest members ever since. Genial, brusque and outspoken, he was always ready for a political talk with any party politician, and brought to bear the hard practical knowledge he had acquired. He rarely missed a meeting, social or bazaar of his party, and his presence will be missed during the coming season's activities. He leaves a widow and six children, three sons and three daughters, to mourn their loss. Another son was killed in the Great War, and two sons are at present in Alberta, Canada. The funeral was arranged for Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Street Parish Churchyard.
