THE CENTRAL SOMERSET GAZETTE - FRIDAY, AUGUST 25, 1922

DEATH OF MR. THOMAS GODFREY - The funeral took place on Monday afternoon at the Parish Church, the Rev. R. G. Harker officiating, of the late Mr. Thomas Godfrey, who for over half a century had been well known as sexton at the church - having succeeded his father, to whom he was assistant - and organ blower. The deceased, who had attained the advanced age of 79, died last week as the result of a throat infection. He was an active man, and was for over sixty years, from the time he left school, in the employ of Messrs. Clark, Son & Morland, following the works when the latter were transferred from Bowling Green to Northover, only giving up work last year. He was held in high esteem by the firm, as well as by his fellow workmen. Mr. Godfrey's wife predeceased him, his family were all grown up, and he had a large number of grandchildren. The great respect in which the deceased was held is shown by the fact that over 70 persons followed in the funeral procession, including Mr. and Mrs. Albert Broughton, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Carey, Mr. and Mrs. W. Wright, Mr. and Mrs. E. Trowbridge (daughters and sons-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. F. Lee, Mr. and Mrs. J. Hind, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Carey, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Godfrey, Messrs. Stanley, Hazel, Gilbert and Horace Broughton, Geo. Hill, Clifford Wright, the Misses A. Carey and Ivy Trowbridge (grandchildren), Messrs. S. and J. Vowles, Mr. and Mrs. Green, Mrs. Godfrey, Mrs. Dowden, Mr. and Mrs. Melbourne Vowles, Mrs. W. Ware, Mrs. Rumble, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Bowden, Mr. and Mrs. J. Clifford, Mrs. MacVicker, Mr. Counsell, Mr. R. Hopkins, Mr. A. Hopkins, Mr. and Mrs. C. Marsh, Mr. Richards, Mrs. W. Hole and many other relatives and friends. Messrs. Clark, Son and Morland, Ltd. were represented by Messrs. John Morland, H. N. B. Dycke and O. Counsell, directors, and Miss Morland, and Messrs. John Fouracre and Albert Carter represented the deceased's fellow workers. Four others, the three brothers King and Mr. F. Squire acted as bearers. The Avalon Leather Board Co. were represented by Mr. J. E. Ward and Mr. Seager, and Mr. Roger Clark also attended. The service was choral, Mr. Talbot being at the organ, and playing suitable funeral music. The Psalm was chanted, and the hymn, "Jesu, lover of my soul," sung in the church. At the graveside the choir say "Peace, perfect peace," and after the interment the Nune Dimittis. The numerous wreaths included one from the Directors of Clark, Son & Morland, Ltd., "In memory of an old friend and valued Employee"; one from his fellow workmen at Northover factory, in loving memory. A third was "In affectionate remembrance of a faithful Church servant, from the Rector and Churchwardens" (both the Rev. A. C. Schofield and Dr. MacVicker, to their great regret, were prevented from attending, the former being absent from home in the North of England, and the doctor having an urgent call at the time). Mrs. Francis J. Clark sent a wreath with much sympathy. the more personal wreaths were: "To dear father, from Ellen, Mary, Beatrice and Annie: 'Peace, perfect peace"; from Ern and George; Tom, Ivy and Clifford; Stanley and Bessie; Rose, Chris, Frank and Jack; Alice Wright; Mr. and Mrs. W. Dowden; Will and Nell; A. and E. Mundy; Tom, Marjorie and Ruby; Mr. and Mrs. Pimm; "Loving remembrance from a friend; and "In loving memory of my dear brother; and ' For ever with the Lord". In the evening a muffled peal was rung on the church bells.
