Obituary - Dennis Carey Succumbs - Sidney paper

Resident of Sidney for the past nine years died last Wednesday at Rest Haven Hospital.

Dennis Carey, 74, was born in Somerset, England. He was a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters and also a member of the Old Age Pensioners Association. Funeral services at the Sands Funeral Chapel Saturday were followed by cremation. Rev. Canon F. C. Vaughan-Birch officiated at the funeral.

Mr. Carey leaves his wife Vera, sons David and Arthur, five grandchildren, sisters Mrs. F. Lea (Rose), Mrs. S. Martin (Bab), and his brothers George Carey of Somerset, England and Frank Carey of Claresholm, Alta.

A former resident, Dennis Carey, 74, Sidney, BC, passed away in Sidney hospital Thursday January 18. Mr. Carey came from Street, Somerset, England to Canada in 1913, living west of Claresholm. He married Vera Francis of the west Claresholm district in St. John's Anglican Church in 1918. They were both well known here, both working on farms east and west of town.

Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Carey left Claresholm in 1921, Mr. Carey working for the CPR in Calgary. After a few years in Calgary they moved to Vancouver and Mr. Carey worked for the CPR until retiring at 65. Later they moved to Sidney.

Surviving Mr. Carey are his widow, two sons - David and Arthur, his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Denny Carey, widow of a son who predeceased his father, five grandchildren, all of Vancouver. Also surviving are one brother, Frank, Claresholm, two sisters in Street, Somerset, England and one brother, George, in England.

Going to Sidney to attend the funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday, were, Frank Carey, his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Don Burnham, all of Claresholm, and Frank Carey's other daughter, Mrs. William Lea, Edmonton.

The Alberta four-some encountered plenty of delays in travelling over the Rogers Pass to the coast. The road was closed because of a snow slide and they drove all Friday night to reach their destination in time.

The death took place in Sidney, British Columbia, at the age of 74, of Mr. Dennis Carey, who left Street in 1913 after working at C. and J. Clarks.

He was for many years a bell ringer at Street Parish Church, and also a very keen footballer.

Burial of his ashes will take place at Street Parish Church on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
